Menstrual Disorders / Abnormal Bleeding

Menstrual irregularities and abnormal menstrual bleeding patterns can occur at any time during life, but are most common during the teenage years and in the premenopausal years of life.

However, any type of excessive menstrual bleeding in women over the age of 35 should never be ignored. The following should be reported to your physician:

  • Abnormally short menstrual cycles (shorter than 21 days),
  • Prolonged menstrual flow (greater than 7 days),
  • Excessively heavy menstrual flow, or
  • Unscheduled bleeding (such as between periods or after intercourse).

It is very important to rule out cancer as a cause for this type of bleeding, but the actual cause is more likely to be secondary to endometrial polyps, fibroid tumors within the uterus or hormonal changes.

For more information on menstrual disorders, or if you are concerned about or are suffering from heavy, frequent or irregular bleeding, please contact our office to discuss the many options available to you to improve your quality of life.
